Join us for an opening night preview of WORDS + CROSSES with Nell. This event is also a celebration of the close of day one of our annual arts festival - #SPARK17.
Both grungy and quirky, ominous and uplifting, WORDS + CROSSES immerses the viewer in a playful and paradoxical world. The artist simply known as Nell loves rock music, having grown up on a diet of AC/DC; she also took her vows as a Buddhist in an ancient Chinese ceremony. Nell embraces these ways of being in both her life and her work. Never afraid to go her own way, her work is instantly recognisable and impossible to forget.
WORDS + CROSSES is Nell’s first solo exhibition in New Zealand, and combines her well-known work Let There be Robe with large-scale paintings and bespoke wallpaper – a reference to her obsession with Colin McCahon.
As part of #SPARK17, Nell will also be in conversation with Auckland Art Gallery Director, Rhana Devenport about her practice, life, rock'n'roll and her love of Colin McCahon.
