With each stitch, threads weave over,
then under,
over
and under again.
Tying together ancestral lines.
Creating pathways just as our ancestors did
through the seas.
A great fullness and depth that cannot be contained. Grasping the ocean,
gentle waves slip past,
salt kissing my fingertips.
In our sea of islands,
lay abounding
traditions, languages, stories.
Knowledge that has weaved in
and out of consciousness.
The ocean leaves a great distance between islands.
Our people did not take hold of the moana,
They listened to its shifting currents,
the whispers of the stars.
In creating, we have our ancestors hidden between each loop, They leave a beacon of light,
helping us navigate life as they once did.
Even if we shield our eyes,
turning from its intensity,
Their glow blankets us in warmth.

Exploration of ‘self’

Spiky sculptural spheres meticulously crafted from black cable ties and inspired by nature’s defences are an explo-ration of the delicate balance between safeguarding our inner core and expressing our true identity amidst external pressures and societal norms
Intricate patterns and interlocking structures reflect the complexities of personal identity as each tie navigates the journey to understanding the authentic self and the often contradictory desires for openness and protection.
Pulling from the interconnected world around us, a timeline of experiences is constructed, shaping who we are as we add and subtract elements from our interactions, our history and culture, personal relationships and lived experiences. Outward barriers we construct and display are self-imposed over time as a coping response to poten-tial negative threats, much like the instinctive defence mechanisms of nature, each layer locks and strengthens the outer shell designed to shield our vulnerabilities and evoke a sense of caution,
Transforming the mundane tie into beautiful complex structures illustrates the possibilities of creative expression when thriving in an authentic space. A visual metaphor for the ever-expanding authentic self-shielded yet visible, sturdy yet flexible, fragile yet robust. The series invites viewers to contemplate the balance of protection and self-preservation on the journey towards authenticity as the barriers we put in place may encourage or ultimately inhibit genuine self-expression.
The celebration of strength reflected in each tie and the complexity of each structure is inherent in each individual and speaks to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of embracing one’s true identity.

In short, it is multi-layered, multi-faceted and has many dimensions. It is not a state, it is a process of becoming and unfolding.
My works reflect themes of navigation, navigation back to my ancestors ats well as through life. I often find myself within the binaries of connection/disconnec-tion, gap/tension as well as a whimsical playfulnesses. I embrace imperfections.
A key connector in my works is the ocean, the vast breadth of water between Samoa to Aotearoa. A couple of my works reflect an attempt to physically pull the islands close, traversing this ocean. The space in my works reflect an open/ongoing narrative.
Our sis Lēafa’s master thesis comes to mind, the ‘Cold Islanders’, when I think of our ancestors coming to NZ, coming from a warm climate. How this manifests for me are memories from my childhood, the polar fleece blanket which is a staple in many island homes, warmth/protec-tion. I also use these for my own children. The tarp from our Tokoroa family gatherings used as make-shift shelters. This is love to me.
Embedded in my works is my own stitched visual language which mimmicks marks in nature, which I drew while on a trip to Samoa, again a connection back to the land. I coexist with my ancestors, time and space is fluid not static. I feel with every stitch I am connecting back to my family.
